What Is Grief?

Grief is a natural and complex emotional response to death or loss. A response that is often defined as the emotional suffering one feels when someone or something they love is taken away.

The Stages

of Grief

It’s important to understand that one’s experience with grief is not a linear process; but instead, a fluid one. Often, we bounce from stage to stage as we move forward on our journey. No one can tell you when to stop grieving. Quite frankly you may never stop grieving. Remember, grief is a journey and not a destination. Only YOU will know when you’ve arrived at a place of acceptance and peace.

The Grief Process

The grieving process is an opportunity to appropriately mourn a loss and then heal. It refers to the range of emotions and psychological adjustments one experiences in response to a significant loss. It encompasses emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physical dimensions. Most commonly, our response to grief manifests mentally and physically.

Symptoms of Grief

Mental Symptoms

  • Confusion, irritability, anxiety, lack of concentration.

  • Metabolic changes leading to depression.

  • Difficulty remembering or having 'brain fog' moments.

  • "Searching behavior" - looking for their loved one in an almost subconscious way.

These Symptoms can impede one's ability to function with clear intention and thought. At the Grief Empowerment Movement, we want our clients to remain production, fully functioning grief survivors and not be crippled by the effects of loss.
